TicketsTickets for local trains and buses
 | | |
In the area of the regional integrated public transport system "Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR)" you can use and change local and regional trains, metro, tramways and buses freely with your ticket.
The VRR area comprises the whole Ruhr area from Duisburg to Dortmund, the region around Duesseldorf and part of the Lower Rhineland.
The Cities south of Duesseldorf, i.e. Cologne and Leverkusen, are part of another public transit system, the "Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS)".
This means, that unfortunately VRR-Tickets are not valid for trips to these cities. You have to use German Railways ("DB") Tickets (which generelly are not valid in trams or buses), the "VRS-Tarif" (available at train stations) for trips to cologne or the "NRW-Tarif" for trips to other cities in Northrhine-Westphalia. | | Integrated System (VRR) |

The fare system inside the VRR:
- A short-distance ticket ("Kurzstrecke") can be used for short trips up to 3 stops (with some exceptions for express and long-distance lines).
- The fare level ("Preisstufe") A is valid for all trips inside the boundaries of Duesseldorf.
- If you want to go to other cities, you have to choose fare level B or C, as indicated in the fare tables at stops and in info booklets.

Some important ticket types in the rhine-ruhr-region (VRR):
- EinzelTicket = Single-trip-ticket
- 4erTicket = 4-trip-ticket (trips in succession or parallel for several persons)
- TagesTicket = DayTicket = valid for 1 person till shut-down (i.e. about 2 a.m.)
- GruppenTicket = GroupTicket = valid for up to 5 persons till shut-down (i.e. about 2 a.m.)
- HotelTicket = Some Hotels offer you as a special service a HotelTicket that is valid on all means local public transport for the time you stay in the hotel.
- For many events, e.g. trade fairs, cultural and sport events, there are "KombiTickets", i.e. the admission ticket for the event is valid as a train-/bus-ticket to and from the event.
Please note: the fair ticket is not valid for other trips than to and from the fairground!
Regional day tickets, esp. if you want to pass over the VRR boundaries, e.g. to Cologne:
- "SchönesWochenende" (Nice Weekend) = DayTicket for up to 5 persons on a Saturday or a Sunday, valid throughout Germany (!), but only on local and regional trains (RB, RE, S), not on Intercity trains (EC, IC, ICE), but also on all Trams, subways, buses.
- "SchönerTagTicket" (Mo-Fr from 9 a.m., Sa/Su without restriction) = DayTicket for up to 5 persons, valid in the whole state of Northrhine-Westphalia (e.g. to Cologne), in regional trains only (RE, S, RB) and all trams, subways and buses. There is a budget version for 1 person: "SchönerTagTicket Single".
Tickets have to be stamped before or at the first boarding (but not when changing the train or, in case of day tickets, when boarding again later). In the railway system (RE, RB, S) the orange validation machines are located at the entry to the platform, in trams and buses the machines are inside the cars.
We are quite sure that this will not come true, but if you travel without a valid ticket, you are obliged to pay a penalty fee of 40 Euro. | | Ticket types
